Why do I need to include the instance?

Mastodon is decentralized. A handle like @alice means nothing without knowing which instance alice is on.

Yes, as long as the instance is reachable and runs a standard Mastodon API.

If the image lives on a CDN the downloader doesn't allowlist, the Open button still works and you can save the image from there.
